Virginia, Great Bridge, Lock Closures

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be performing valve replacement and diving operations at the Great Bridge Lock on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal located in Chesapeake, Virginia, starting on February 9, 2021 and concluding approximately April 2, 2021.

1) From February 9, 2021 to February 11, 2021, installation of a cofferdam on the north west end of lock wall will occur. The Great Bridge Lock will be closed from 7:00 AM to approximately 7:00 PM on these 3 days. February 12, 2021 will be used as contingency date in the event of any adverse weather or other unexpected delays.

2) From February 15, 2021 to approximately April 5, 2021, a crew will be working on the removal and installation of the replacement valve 7 days per week. During this time period, there will be occasional delays to navigation to allow for crane support in the lock.

3) During the week of March 29, 2021, the removal and relocation of the coffer dam will take place. The exact time and closure will be issued in a separate Notice to Navigation Interest in March 2021.

The horizontal clearance of the lock will be reduced to 70 feet during these repairs. Vessels shall provide a large berth to the work area which will be marked with a yellow safety beam on the lock wall.
